HSE South announces Community Welfare Services for flood victims

The HSE South has today (Tuesday, 24th November 2009) announced details of its Community Welfare Services for victims of flooding in Cork city and county.

People who have experienced hardship due to the unprecedented flooding in recent days are encouraged to attend a HSE South Community Welfare Clinic in their area. Opening times for the 50 clinics located across Cork city, West Cork and North Cork follow.

The clinics will run for this week only, however, depending on demand, may be extended.

The Community Welfare Service is funded by the Department of Social Welfare Services to make Exceptional Needs Payments (ENP) to people on social welfare or HSE payments. Alternatively, an Urgent Needs Payment (UNP) can also be made to people who would not normally be entitled to Social Welfare Assistance, to assist in cases of flood damage with immediate needs such as food, clothing, fuel, or household goods.

People attending the clinics are asked to bring with them, proof of identity – like a Passport or drivers’ license; and proof of income, like a recent pay slip or a letter from their employer. Payments are means tested, and subject to assessment by Community Welfare Officers based on each individuals personal circumstances and degree of loss due to flooding or water damage to their home or possessions.

“We are particularly encouraging people who may have lost everything in the floods and those who don’t have household insurance to attend one of our community welfare clinics for assessment, said Gabrielle O’Keeffe, General Manager for South Lee Community Services with the HSE South.

Each case will be dealt with on its merits and following assessment, payments may be made to assist people in recovering from the difficulties they may have experienced in the wake of flooding.

The suspension of the strike action on Tuesday 24th November by public sector unions for flood-affected areas, has meant that the HSE South can go ahead with providing Community Welfare Clinics from today (Tuesday, 24th November 2009).

The opening times for clinics in Cork city, North Cork and West Cork are as follows and more information is available from the HSE Information Line on 1850 24 1850.
