Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer has condemned the murder of a man in a gangland style shooting in the city last night and has called for resources to be given to Gardai to help them prevent the escalation of drug and turf wars.
Senator Buttimer has said, “Under no circumstances can we countenance gangland crime becoming rife on the streets of Cork. It is imperative that the resources are given to Gardai in Cork to prevent the escalation of drug turf wars.”
Senator Buttimer continued, “The upsurge in gangland murders in Dublin cannot be allowed to happen in Cork. As Fine Gael has pointed out repeatedly, urgent action must be taken immediately:
• Senior Garda vacancies must be filled immediately
• Give customs the resources needed to prevent the entry of drugs into the country
• Increase the number of community Gardai to assist in information gathering
• Restrict movements of gangland criminals on evidence of a Chief Superintendent
“As the Fine Gael Seanad Drugs Spokesperson, I am activeley aware of the ongoing battle society is facing with the increasing use of drugs, therefore it is essential that every resource is used to curb drug dealing and drug lords in engaging in gangland activity which is threatening communities.”
Senator Buttimer concluded, “Gangland activity is not accpetable and the murder in Wilton last night is a wake up call to people that gangland activity is very much active and poses a real threat.”
