Today’s signing into law of the Civil Partnership Bill heralds a coming of age for our young Republic according to Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson on Equality, Senator Jerry Buttimer.

“I very much welcome the signing into law by the President of this very important social legislation today. I wish to pay tribute to many people who have campaigned tirelessly and indefatigably for this recognition and safeguarding of civil rights.

“As I said in the Seanad during my second stage speech, this Bill is not an attack on the church, on the institution of the church or on the sacrament of marriage. It is a Bill not about sexuality but about rights, equality and, ultimately, people.”
