Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer has called on the VHI to postpone its proposed fee increase.

Speaking today Senator Buttimer said, “I am calling on the VHI to defer the introduction of this ridiculous rise in its charges. The VHI notice was insufficient given the scale of the increases being proposed. People can’t get through to VHI offices and have many queries unanswered on their existing premiums. Peoiple need more time in making decisions regarding their health insurance.

Senator Buttimer said “The proposed VHI rate increase is crazy. I contend this hike in charges is a new form of ageism. Yesterday’s announcement by the VHI that it will increase its charges by 15%-45% from February 1, has caused chaos, created worry tension and fear amongst many elderly people. It is unfair and unnecessary “

“I have received numerous complaints from people about being unable to speak to VHI personnel. Phones aren’t being answered; customers are being cut off and forcing them into unnecessary worry, It is having a massive effect and causing undue stress on people.
