Fine Gael Cork South Central TD Jerry Buttimer today (Friday) announced that the National Transport Authority is to deliver 50 Real Time Passenger Information signs in Cork city by the end of this year, making travelling by bus in Cork far more convenient.  Deputy Buttimer received the information in a reply to a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Transport regarding the roll out of the RTPI programme outside of Dublin.

“The Minster for Public Transport and Community has informed me that the Real Time Passenger Information programme will reach Cork by the end of this year.  As part of the rollout, 50 RTPI signs will be erected, giving bus passengers real time information of when the next bus will arrive.

“The system, which is already operational in Dublin, gives people certainty and is proving to be very popular. Once the programme is up and running in Cork, I have no doubt that commuters will find travelling by bus infinitely more convenient.

“The plan is to have a test sign in place in October and to have the remaining signs installed by the end of the year.  As Cork is the first city to get this system using Bus Éireann data, target dates are subject to delivery of interfaces which allow Automatic Vehicle Location to communicate with the Real Time system.

“The expansion of this system has been made possible by Ministerial Order to provide RTPI to Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.  At first the system will only work with Bus Éireann data but it is expected to be open to private operators next year.

“Delivering RTPI to Cork is a signal of the Government’s commitment to the city.  The N25 upgrade is one of only six national roads projects going ahead this year and now Cork is in line to get the first Bus Éireann RTPI.”
