Continuing its examination of the effects of alcohol marketing of young people, the Committee on Health and Children will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 17th November at 11.30 am in Leinster House.

At this meeting the Committee will be briefed by representatives from the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland, Alcohol Marketing Communications Monitoring Body and RothCo and Irish International, two advertising agencies.

Chairman of the Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, TD said: “Tomorrow’s meeting gives Members of the Committee an opportunity to hear the views of the professional bodies and companies who are engaged in the advertising and marketing industry in Ireland.

As a Committee we have spent considerable time on this issue meeting with the various stakeholders involved.  We have heard some worrying facts and figures and are concerned with the marked increase in the levels of alcohol abuse in our young people.  The opinions and views of the various bodies and groups we have invited to meet with us tomorrow are vital to the issue of how alcohol is presented and marketed to young people.  The advertising methods and marketing techniques used to promote alcohol use by young people need to be examined and highlighted. I look forward to hearing the industry’s views and opinions on this issue.”

The Committee will meet at 11.30 am on Thursday, 17th November, in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000.
