Commodore Mark Mellett appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) of the Defence Forces.

Commodore Mellett’s appointment was approved by the Cabinet on the recommendation of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter TD, and takes effect from November 5th 2013.

I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Commodore Mark Mellett on his appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) of the Defence Forces. This appointment recognises Commodore Mellett’s tremendous contribution to our naval service, in particular the leadership he has shown during his time as Flag Officer Commanding Naval Service.

During his period at the helm of our naval service, Commodore Mellett developed significant links with industry and educational bodies in Cork. These initiatives led to the creation of the Irish Maritime and Energy Cluster which, I have no doubt, will be a long term legacy of his leadership and vision. The establishment of this cluster will ensure that Cork is a base for ocean energy research and a place that encourages innovative partnerships in this field of expertise.

I am confident that Commodore Mellett will make a similarly valuable contribution to the entire Defence Force.
