Minister of State Michael Ring, TD, announces €58,000 in funding for a Multi-Use-Games-Area in Douglas Park.

Local Fine Gael representatives Jerry Buttimer, TD, and Cllr Deirdre Forde have said that funding for a Multi-Use-Games-Area in Douglas Park will provide a much needed community resource for the people of Douglas. Deputy Buttimer and Cllr Forde were commenting following the announcement by Minister of State Michael Ring, TD, of €58,000 for this project which will include the provision of outdoor gym equipment.

Deputy Buttimer said “This funding will enable Cork County Council to enhance the facilities available at Douglas Park. I am very pleased that Cllr Forde and myself were successful in impressing upon the Minister the importance of funding this project. Douglas is a highly populated area with a very significant proportion of young families, extra recreational facilities are much needed.

“The last Census showed that there are almost 5,400 families in the Douglas area, accounting for 7,399 children. Additionally, 16% of families are classified as being in the pre-family phase, ensuring that for years to come the number of children in the area will continue to grow. Clearly the demographics of Douglas indicate that the population would make use of the MUGA and outdoor gym equipment.”

Cllr Forde, in welcoming this funding, said “This substantial funding will enhance the recreational facilities available in Douglas. I am delighted that Minister Ring has allocated the €58,000, the maximum amount that can be awarded, for a Multi-Use-Games-Area in Douglas Park. This funding is coming from the Department of Sport, in partnership with Irish Public Bodies, and a further contribution to the project will be made by Cork County Council.

“Improving the facilities available in Douglas Park will be welcome by everyone that uses the park. Encouraging and supporting physical exercise is very important and this new Multi-Use-Games-Area will provide greater opportunity for everyone to use the Park as part of their regular exercise routine.”
