Government has provided funding for five of new school projects in Carrigaline and the southern suburbs of Cork City next year.
These projects will include a new primary school at Gaelscoil Charraig Uí Leighin and a new special school for Sonas, Carrigaline. Funding has also been put in place for new post primary schools; South Suburbs Post-Primary School, Carrigaline Post Primary and at Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin.
As well as the new builds work is on-going at Douglas Boys National School. During 2014 extensions were completed at Carrigaline Community School and Scoil Nioclais, Grange. All of these projects will significantly improve the current inadequate facilities in these schools. We need to provide new schools and extensions to continue to meet the accommodation requirements of our growing school going population.
Nationally, €450 million will be spent on primary and post-primary infrastructure next year, with a projected expenditure on large scale projects of over €280 million.
These school projects will deliver over 27,800 permanent school places and of these over 23,700 are additional places. The remainder will be the replacement of temporary or unsatisfactory accommodation.
