Leader of the Seanad Éireann, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed the decision by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan TD, to hire an additional 200 staff in the passport office.
“Since the people of the UK voted to leave the EU, the passport office has been inundated with enquiries and applications from British citizens who are entitled to also hold an Irish passport.
“Figures so far this year show an increase of over 77% in Irish passport applications in Northern Ireland, and a near 71% increase in Great Britain.
“It is very welcome that Minister Flanagan has taken this decision to take on extra staff in the passport office to cope with the demand and hopefully it will prevent any undue delays in processing. However, I would still urge everyone to check their own passport and if it needs to be renewed do it now, don’t just wait until the week before your summer holidays!”
