Over €6.3 Million for Cork sports clubs

Leader of the Seanad and Senator for Cork South Central Jerry Buttimer has said that over €6.3 Million in funding will greatly benefit sports clubs across the county over the coming year.

Jerry Buttimer was speaking as the successful applications under the Sports Capital Grants were announced by Minister of State with special responsibility for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin and Shane Ross, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport.

Jerry Buttimer said: “I am delighted to see this much needed funding going to the places it will really make a big difference, our local sports clubs.

“This funding will benefit nearly 30 clubs all over the county. Active engagement in sports not only helps keep young people healthy, but also builds confidence, independence and promotes team building.

“The Sports Capital Programme was re-instated by the last Fine Gael government in 2012, after it had been cut by Fianna Fáil in the wake of the economic crash.

“It represents an excellent value for money investment. It is crucial we invest in sport and the health of our population, particularly with obesity on the rise.

“Investing in sport is good for the health of the nation, both literally and economically,” said the Cork Senator
