Voices of our young people at the core of new mental health taskforce

I believe the newly established mental health task force will bring about real change in how we address mental health issues in Ireland.

As former chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, I welcome the announcement by Minister Helen McEntee that musician and founder of the organisation ‘Lust for Life’ Niall Breslin will chair the young persons’ reference group.

“The committee invited Brezzie to speak in January of this year and he spoke passionately about the mental and emotional well-being of the youth in this country and how we could work together to build a more supportive and sustainable future for our children and teenagers. His personal struggle with an anxiety disorder which he described as a  “ monster” had a real impact on all members of the committee.

“It is also great to see former Welfare Officer of UCC Students Union Cian Power on the taskforce. Cian did fantastic work for students here in UCC during his time in the position and I have no doubt he will do a fantastic job representing 3rd level students all over Ireland.

“The new taskforce will be out on the frontline meeting service providers, parents, teachers, volunteer groups and most importantly the young people in communities. It will ensure that by listening to the opinions and ideas of our young people will bring about a more open and supportive national conversation about mental health and well-being”.
